A plaque\ncommissioned by the Parish of St Helier to commemorate the deportations of\nhundreds of men, women and young children in September 1942 was erected on\nAlbert Quay on Monday 16th<\/sup> September.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The event\nwas attended by some 150 people, including 13 former internees together with\ntheir family members and close friends, former politicians and members of the\nPorts of Jersey. The Constable of St Helier, Simon Crowcroft, gave the opening\naddress which was followed by narrations from 5 former internees who recounted\ntheir memories of the day they were deported 77 years ago, many of them just\nyoung children.  Their memories\nsurrounded the knock on the door of their homes late at night by a German soldier\nto the harrowing train journey across Europe to their final destination in\nsouthern Germany; first Biberach and then on to Wurzach where they were to\nremain behind barbed wire until their liberation on 28th<\/sup> April 1945.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The plaque\nwas unveiled by the Bailiff together with former internee, Mrs Pamela Tanguy;\nit was her idea to have the commemorative plaque.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Father Nick\nBerry conducted a short service of remembrance which was followed by the laying\nof a wreath by Sarah Journeaux, in memory of 12 former internees who did not\nreturn from their captivity \u2013 two of whom were young children. Angela Francey\nthen read an extract from Archbishop Desmond Tutu\u2019s Handbook \u201cReconciliation\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
